Dior’s Timely Addition

Christian Dior turned to its sister company Swiss watchmaker Zenith, both divisions of LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, to create a special movement for its second men’s timepiece. Only 15 pieces will be created of the Chiffre Rouge, which was unveiled earlier this month in Dior boutiques. The automatic chronograph chronometer, $49,200, is composed of 278 different pieces, including 29 diamonds―12 baguette cut, 16 princess cut, and 1 brilliant cut―adorning the dial, winder, and case back. The name Chiffre Rouge references the Dior Homme black and red signature colors that appear on the watches with a red-numbered date and black hands. The large, 38 mm case gives the timepiece the heft it needs to stand out as a men’s model, while its precision―measuring time to 1/10 of a second― ensures that the watch is more a distinct timekeeper than a fashion accessory.
