Tempered Strength

Honduran cigars are notably meaty, but that simile can encompass everything from a flank steak to a porterhouse. However, the Rocky Patel Renaissance is most definitely a bone-in filet mignon, which is not always found, even in the best steakhouses. Likewise, this limited-production cigar is not going to be in every tobacconist’s humidor, as only 6,000 boxes are being produced annually. Personified by the newest Renaissance shape, a 5×50 robusto, the rich, medium dark brown Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper is combined with a Nicaraguan binder from Jalapa and a Nicaraguan filler, resulting in a smoke that is rich and sophisticated, on the top end of medium, just bordering strong. As such, it is a perfect match for superpremium bourbon like a 16-year-old A.H. Hirsch or Blanton’s single barrel.
